S.F. financier studying new journalism venture Hellman group piloting 2-month study Warren Hellman issued a statement Friday about his effort to "sustain independent news organizations" at a time of newspaper layoffs and threatened shutdownns. "My goal is to explore, in a serious way, some ideas capable of supporting quality journalism -- regardless of what may happen to any particular organization," Hellman said. Any changes to the paper would require the involvement of Hearst, which hasn't indicated any interest. November 2008
