Court interpreters face bargaining challenges
Silvia Barden - Federation President - Media Workers Guild - CFI - 11 May 2008
Court interpreters across the state are preparing for the second round of contract negotiations since the law (SB371) passed that made them employees in September 2002. The law created a first time ever employment system for interpreters and divided the state into four multi-employer regions for the purposes of bargaining and the first contracts were bargained in 2005. While the regional system provides interpreters strength in numbers, it poses some special challenges for the union given that the contracts cover approximately 850 interpreters in hundreds of work sites throughout the state.
