Classified jobs disappearing at Chronicle

Four Guild members laid off Monday

Media Workers Guild

The Chronicle gave layoff notices Monday to four colleagues in the Classified Advertising department whose duties were mainly associated with taking paid obituary notices.

The work has been transferred to Houston, company representatives said.

Each of the four was given two weeks' notice pay plus two weeks pay per year of service and medical coverage for an equal number of weeks per our contract. All four were sent home immediately, with a brief opportunity to clear out their personal belongings or to make arrangements to pick them up later.

The Guild is still seeking specific information about what other layoffs might be planned but was told that no more are expected this week. The company would not guarantee that, however.
